Take a first look inside at the National Theatre’s new mega production of Follies – lead by Imelda Staunton.
Stephen Sondheim’s musical, directed by Dominic Cooke, marks Imelda’s first performance back at the National Theatre in more than 15 years. It also marks the first time the show has ever been staged at the NT.
The show features a cast of 37 and an orchestra of 21. Imelda is joined by Tracie Bennett and Janie Dee who play the magnificent Follies.
Announcing the news, NT director Rufus Norris previously said: “Musical theatre is hugely important and of course, like audiences all over the world I love Stephen’s work.”
Adding: “Imelda’s performance in Guys and Dolls at the NT is the stuff of legend and I am delighted she is to take the lead in Follies under the direction of Dominic Cooke.”

New York, 1971. There’s a party on the stage of the Weismann Theatre. Tomorrow the iconic building will be demolished. Thirty years after their final performance, the Follies girls gather to have a few drinks, sing a few songs and lie about themselves.
Follies includes classic songs as Broadway Baby, I’m Still Here and Losing My Mind.
